How to lay large format tiles – the most common mistakes and how to avoid them

Large format tiles look impressive – less joints, more space, modern character. But the larger the tile, the less errors they forgive at the assembly stage. Uneven ground, bad glue selection, no leveling system – each of these problems with small tiles can still be hidden, with large formats you can see it immediately.

What do we consider to be a large format?

The conventional limit is tiles over 60×60 cm. The increasingly popular 80×80, 120×60 or 120×120 cm formats require a different approach than standard bathroom tiles. The larger surface of the tile means a larger lever – any unevenness of the substrate or glue translates into a clearer deflection and uneven edges.

Mistake 1: Insufficient ground preparation

The substrate for large tiles must be even, stable and load-bearing. The deviation, which goes unnoticed with small plates, with a 120×60 cm format gives a clear deflection of the center of the plate. Before starting work, check the ground level with a patch – the permissible deviation is usually 3 mm per 2 running meters. Align any unevenness with putty or screed before gluing.

Mistake 2: Bad glue selection and application technique

Large tiles require glue with increased adhesion and flexibility – standard cement adhesive for small formats may not be enough. The technique of application is equally important: with large formats, the adhesive is applied both to the substrate and on the bottom of the tile (the so-called buttering-floating method). This allows you to fill the entire contact surface and avoid empty spaces under the tile that lead to cracks.

Apply the glue with a comb with a suitable tooth – for formats over 60 cm, a 10-12 mm comb is recommended.

Mistake 3: No leveling system

This is the most common mistake in laying large tiles on your own. Without a leveling system, it is difficult to maintain an even plane between the adjacent tiles throughout the adhesive setting – especially when you work alone and you do not have four hands to hold and correct at the same time. Lippage with a format of 60×60 cm or more is very clear and practically impossible to hide with a grout.

The tile leveling system solves this problem mechanically. Clips and wedges keep the adjacent tiles in one plane until the glue has set, without the need to constantly check with the spirit level.

Mistake 4: not taking into account the dilation

Large plates react more to changes in temperature and humidity. When laying on large surfaces, it is necessary to maintain expansion joints – at walls, poles and every few meters of surfaces. The lack of dilation leads to stresses that can cause the plates to detach or break over time.

Mistake 5: Rush

Glue under large tiles takes time to fully bind. Walking on freshly laid tiles or removing the leveling system too early can move the tiles and destroy the work effect. The setting time depends on the type of glue and the conditions – check the data of the adhesive manufacturer and do not shorten this time.

Large tiles reward patience and good preparation. The effect of a well-arranged large-format surface is worth the additional workload at the preparation stage.
